A touring photographic exhibition, by Petre Smith, accompanying the theatre production of The Island, a play set on Robben Island in South Africa, where Nelson Mandela and a number of other political prisoners were held.
The photographs, taken earlier this year and exhibited for the first time, show the island on which the play is set – the remains of the prison still in place in its extraordinarily exotic location off cape-town, Mandela’s cell etc. They are re-produced as beautiful colour prints on heavy german etching paper, probably enclosed in Perspex.
Petre Smith is a South African photographer now living in the UK who grew up taking, extraordinarily, family holidays on the prison island.
This exhibition is in The Snug.
