We’ve taken inspiration from the Watanoha Smile Project – a beautiful and compassionate vision from artist Tomo Inukai and Japanese school children who used found materials to create cheerful characters. At our family workshop, we will provide an array of objects and guide children in making their own distinctive sculpture. We are also asking for participants to bring their own quirky objects to add to their creation. More info below 👇🏻 . . In 2011, Watanoha Elementary School suffered heavy damage in the Tohoku Earthquake and became the city’s refugee shelter for residents who lost their homes. Together the volunteers and children made artworks from the fragments (wreckage) of the town that were washed into the playground. They turned debris from a troubling situation into something bright and positive. Using the found objects, they worked together to create approximately 200 unique and quirky pieces in a project called Watanoha Smile. These children had very little resources to build their creations and had to rely mainly on their imaginations and with Tomo’s help they managed to turn the debris, full of negative memories, into positive, brilliant characters — works that strikingly impress anyone who sees them.
