Paul likes to perform made-up words and music that he calls “mayfly art.”

What he means is that the words and music he creates in his gigs last only for the time that they are performed. They never existed before and will never exist again.

This quite extreme approach to being an entertainer does make Paul’s shows exceptional. They are entirely spontaneous. No set. No “material.” Just the terror of making art in the NOW.

But: gentleness, intensity, melody, human frailty, a desire not to flinch from people-truths.

Who is he? Belfast-born, making music in Bristol since 1988. Key player in Three Cane Whale, Organelles, and a score-and-more of other bands, projects, and collaborations.Paul mainly plays guitar and sings, although he makes noises with other instruments.  In a now ancient-seeming time, Paul was the first performer in Bristol to make multitimbral live loops, including vocal harmonies and subtly sophisticated off-the-cuff soundscapes.

By the time other artists had started to catch on, Paul had itchy-feetedly moved back to mostly wholly live shows, with scarcely any technology. Harder. Scarier. Better. He hopes.
