Cardiff based folk trio Craven perform traditional ballads with carefully crafted arrangements.

Putting sound up front, their show swings from the intimacy of the unaccompanied voice to walls of drone. They take influence for their sound world from punk, electronic dance music and classical chamber music, alongside more traditional folk sounds.

They set out to approach the often heavy themes of traditional folk – life and death, war, poverty – with irony and wry wit. They seek out the queer and contemporary scavenged from old songs, and allow old words to take on new meanings for new contexts.

Their upcoming debut release, “Baby Vs Crow” exemplifies this tongue in cheek attitude. A mixtape consisting of 7 traditional folk songs, it will showcase their breadth of sound from the bright, punk-lead “Arthur McBride”, to the darker “Crow on the Cradle” with synth like arppeggiation.

Craven is comprised of Will Bremner (Melodeon/Concertina), Elian Moisey (Double Bass/Viola da Gamba), and Rhiannon Takel (Fiddle/Mandola).
